Dear friends,

Sorry I’ve been remiss for the last few days in sending out my video links — even my daughter complained. Just got too busy, tired, exhausted. Not wasted, though — although I am now inclined to send you some connections to the world of recreational (and still illegal) substances.

So, good people, here’s my favourite wake-up music, a lovely piano and vocal from the inimitable Fats Waller. Note that this was recorded for V-Disc, a label designed to provide music for American soldiers! No movie, but an hilarious, super-cool song, and well over 60 years old (hey, just like me!)

Cab Calloway was hugely popular in the late 30s and 40s; I saw him in London as Sportin’ Life in Porgy and Bess (my final date with my very first girl-friend!) — so, have YOU ever met that funny reefer man?

Finally, here’s a cautionary tale from Jackson Browne (with David Lindley, playing violin!)… recorded for the BBC (!) in the mid-70s.

S’cuse me, I need another toke… oh, damn, I have to WORK…
